TRAVERSE CITY — Michael Estes called a press conference for Wednesday to address his status as mayor following his arrest for drunken driving.
Estes will make his statement at 10 a.m. outside the Governmental Center, 400 Boardman Ave. He said in a prepared statement he will not respond to questions.
Estes, 63, was arrested Oct. 23 on his way home from a candidate forum and charged with first-offense drunken driving. He was widely favored to win re-election to a third term on Nov. 5 prior to his arrest.
Estes previously told the Record-Eagle his first reaction was to resign and withdraw from his re-election bid. He later said he was encouraged by the positive reaction of friends and associates who asked him not to step down.
