Local experts to teach about native plants

TRAVERSE CITY—The Grand Traverse Conservation District will host an open house that showcases dozens of native species of conifers, hardwoods, and shrubs that can dress up home landscapes and attract wildlife.

Local experts will be on hand at the March 14 event to help folks identify native species that are right for their landscape and proper ways to care for them. The open house takes place 4 p.m.- 6:30 p.m., at the Boardman River Nature Center. The open house intends to inform people about native species prior to the Conservation District’s annual seedling sale on April 19, 10 a.m.- 6 p.m., and April 20, 10 a.m.- 2 p.m., also at the Boardman River Nature Center.

Go to www.natureiscalling.org for more information or to register for the open house.

The Grand Traverse Conservation District began hosting its annual seedling sale in the days following the “Dust Bowl” era in the 1930s and ‘40s. Originally held to help farmers manage their lands and crops, the annual sale now benefits anyone looking to restore their home landscapes. The Grand Traverse Conservation District offers only native species, which support an amazing diversity of insects and other wildlife.

Sponsored by the Les and Anne Biederman Foundation, the annual seedling sale supports the Conservation District’s education and conservation efforts that connect the community to nature.
