Education Newsmakers: 02/26/2013

n Traverse City West Middle School student Jackson Steele and Traverse City East Middle School student Matthew Failor recently won their school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee. Both students now move one step closer to a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship. TC West Middle School runner-up Kyle Skarshaug and TC East Middle School runner-up Nicholas Simerson, and third-place finishers Donovan Flickenger, of TC West, and Drew Farmer, of TC East, followed Steele and Failor.

n Traverse City Area Public Schools students Kalvis Hornburg and Jessica Kalbfleisch are finalists for the 2012-2013 Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) Scholar-Athlete Award. Hornburg is a member of the TC Central High School soccer and ski teams. Kalbfleisch is a member of the TC West High School volleyball, basketball and soccer teams.
