One arrested in Leelanau vehicle thefts

SUTTONS BAY — A string of Leelanau County vehicle thefts and larcenies led to a Mt. Pleasant man’s arrest and a statewide manhunt for another suspect.

An investigation into the Sunday night crime spree began with a caller reporting two suspicious men were entering vehicles and homes on tribal land in Suttons Bay Township. A Ford Explorer was reported stolen about 8 p.m., and a sheriff’s deputy later located it parked in Suttons Bay.

Leelanau County Sheriff Mike Borkovich said two suspects ran from the scene, leaving a 15-year-old Mt. Pleasant boy behind in another vehicle that was not stolen. Borkovich said another deputy tracked down and arrested one 22-year-old suspect “fairly soon” afterward.

“I’m very proud of the deputies for getting them so fast,” Borkovich said.

Authorities found property believed stolen from homes in Omena and Peshawbestown inside the stolen vehicle.

One suspect, a 19-year-old Mt. Pleasant man, remains at-large. Borkovich said investigators believe the suspect stole a second vehicle from South West Bay Shore Drive that was eventually found abandoned in Mecosta County.

Members of the public who had items stolen from their cars or homes may call Leelanau County dispatch at 231-256-8800.
