LELAND — Twenty-one local artisans will show and sell their creations at the Merry Marketplace Christmas arts and crafts show on Saturday, Dec. 7.

Cookie Extravaganza

SUTTONS BAY — The Suttons Bay Bingham Friendship Center will hold its Cookie Extravaganza on Sunday, Dec. 8.

Shoppers can mix and match selections to make up an assortment of cookies that will be sold for $7 a pound. The sale will be open from noon-3 p.m. at the Friendship Center. Proceeds benefit the center and its activities. For details, call Mary Bush, 271-4404.

Art lecture

TRAVERSE CITY — Mary McNichols, a juror for the “Art of the Sleeping Bear Dunes” exhibit on display at the Dennos Museum Center, will give an illustrated lecture on Sunday, Dec. 8.

The lecture starts at 1:30 p.m. at the museum center, 1410 College Dr. McNichols will discuss the exhibit’s various artistic themes of nature and place the artists in the exhibit within the larger context of diverse approaches to landscape painting in both western and non-western cultures. Hip hop demo

TRAVERSE CITY — “The Drop,” a free hip hop demonstration, will be presented on Monday, Dec. 9.

The 7:45 p.m. performance features new choreography and freestyle moves by Northwestern Michigan College hip hop students. It will be held in Milliken Auditorium at the Dennos Museum Center, 1410 College Dr. Admission is free and the public is welcome.

Successful Aging

TRAVERSE CITY — Dee Wilkinson from the Area Agency on Aging of Northwest Michigan will be the featured speaker at the Monday, Dec. 9, Successful Aging Series program.

Wilkinson will discuss “Winter Survival Tips & Techniques” at 2 p.m. at the Grand Traverse Pavilions on South Elmwood Avenue. The program is free and open to the public. For details, call 932-3207.

School retirees

TRAVERSE CITY — Reservations are needed by Friday, Dec. 6, for the next meeting of the Grand Traverse Association of Retired School Personnel.

The group will meet for lunch and a holiday music program at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, at the West Bay Beach-A Holiday Inn Resort, 615 E. Front St. The chapter also is looking for donations of lower elementary library books and math manipulatives. Call 933-4269 for details or reservations.

Visit with Santa

KINGSLEY — Santa Claus will visit The Rock of Kingsley, 115 Blair St., on Saturday, Dec. 7.

The doors open at 5 p.m. and activities will be hosted from 6-8 p.m. There will be pictures with Santa for a $5 suggested donation, a 50/50 drawing, children’s craft and coloring pages, Letters to Santa and Christmas Cards for members of the Armed Forces, face painting, free cookies, coffee and hot chocolate, and a hand-painted chair silent auction. The Snack Shack also will be open for food purchases.

DKG holiday lunch

TRAVERSE CITY — Area women educators currently teaching, in support roles, or retired are invited to the Delta Kappa Gamma Traverse City Phi chapter’s holiday luncheon.

Tea and story time

KALKASKA — The Kalkaska County Library, 247 S. Cedar St., will host a “Tea 4 You” lecture and story time with Santa Claus.

Tea expert Tiffany Ellis will discuss tea blends at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 12. Tea tasting also will be offered. A $4 donation is suggested and proceeds benefit the Friends of the Kalkaska County Library Building Fund. Call Marilyn Coville, 384-6032, to learn more.

Jeffery Schatzer will read his book “The Elves in Santa’s Workshop” at a holiday story time from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, at the library. Children also can create Christmas cards with library staff and decorate cookies provided by Kalkaska Great Start parents. Schatzer’s book will be available to purchase at a discount. Holiday needs

TRAVERSE CITY — The Goodwill Community Holiday Needs program is under way and continues through Monday, Dec. 16.

The program provides gifts to families in need. Participating families are able to “shop” for gift items and necessities in a temporary store stocked with merchandise that has been purchased or donated specifically for the program.

New, unwrapped gifts from Goodwill’s “wish list” may be dropped off at the Traverse City area Goodwill Stores, Chico’s, 225 E. Front St., Traverse City, and Leelanau Computer Repair inside Radio Shack, 325 N. St. Joseph St., Suttons Bay.
