Probation for sex offender after Cherry Knoll incident

— TRAVERSE CITY — A registered sex offender who ventured onto school grounds will serve a year of probation.

Jared Buchner, 38, pleaded guilty in January to a single misdemeanor count of attempted loitering or working in a student safety zone as a sex offender. A judge recently sentenced him to a year of probation.

Buchner's wife, Jessica Buchner, was a volunteer basketball coach at Cherry Knoll Elementary. She briefly left Jared Buchner alone with student athletes in the school's gym on the afternoon of Nov. 16.

No children made allegations of any inappropriate conduct by Buchner.

State law forbids sex offenders from being on school grounds. Jared Buchner was convicted of third-degree criminal sexual conduct in Grand Traverse County Circuit Court in 2002.
