Grand Traverse Commission to elect new officers

Lemcool, Wheelock expected to become chairman, vice chair

TRAVERSE CITY — The Grand Traverse County Commission will elect two officers and seat two new board members at a 2013 kickoff meeting on Wednesday.

Commissioners are expected to select Herb Lemcool as board chairman, Commissioner Larry Inman said. Commissioner Addison Wheelock Jr. likely will become the commission's vice chair.

Both expressed interest in the respective positions, Inman said.

"I just think it's my time to step up to the plate and take on some more responsibility," Lemcool said.

Dan Lathrop and Charlie Renny will make their county board debuts. Lathrop, a Republican, defeated incumbent Democrat Ross Richardson in the general election. Renny ran unopposed in the commission's 7th District.

Renny said he is excited to take office, and to see how the smaller board functions. Redistricting this year scaled the commission from nine members to seven members.

"That changes the dynamics a lot, I think," Renny said.

Commissioners Larry Fleis, Jason Gillman and Robert Hentschel did not seek reelection. Fleis instead successfully ran for a Blair Township trustee seat. Gillman ran for a position in the state House of Representatives but lost in the primary election. Hentschel lost in the county treasurer primary race.

The meeting is scheduled for 8 a.m. at the Governmental Center on Boardman Avenue.
