Police: Man beat wife

Officials: Man beat, sexually assaulted his wife at hotel

TRAVERSE CITY — A Gaylord man who police said beat up his wife did so during a reunion intended to "patch things up" between the couple.

The man, 28, is locked up at the Grand Traverse County jail after the weekend incident. He could face criminal sexual conduct and aggravated assault charges after police said he assaulted his wife, 19, at the Shadowland Motel on Munson Avenue.

"They were separated for a while and were trying to get back together, apparently," Traverse City Police Capt. Steve Morgan said. "I don't think things went well."

The suspect hasn't yet been charged.

Morgan wasn't sure when the man and woman checked into the hotel, but they were there late Saturday night when violence erupted, he said. A man in another room heard a commotion from the room where the couple was staying.

"When he looked out, the female came running from the room holding her head and the husband was following her," Morgan said.

The suspect screamed at the witness to go back in his room, and the witness immediately dialed 911.

Officers arrived and found the woman with multiple head and facial injuries, none of which were considered life-threatening. She told police her husband engaged in forced sexual activity with her, and grew angry when she tried to make him stop.

The incident was witnessed by the couple's two-year-old child, Morgan said. It's a good thing the suspect was arrested and will face consequences for his actions, Morgan said.

"This guy is where he needs to be at this point," he said.

Neither an owner nor manager of Shadowland could be reached for comment.
