— TRAVERSE CITY — One season removed from a trip to the Class C state finals, Traverse City St. Francis started this year's volleyball tournament with a 3-0 win over Glen Lake in a Class C district opener at St. Francis High School.
The Glads started the match strong, winning 25-12, 25-6, then completed the sweep with a 25-21 victory in the third game.
Madelyn Rysztak was the Gladiators' big hitter at the net with 20 kills. Sophie Spencer added 11 kills and also had six aces. Megan Knudsen had 24 assists for St. Francis and Olivia Hardy came up with three aces.
"It was a good way to open the tournament," said St. Francis co-coach Heather Simpson. "We played well. Our goal was just to win and move on. We're excited. We're playing well. We just want to keep playing."
St. Francis will do just that on Wednesday when it takes on Lake City, which drew a bye, in Kalkaska in the district semifinals. In the other semifinal McBain faces Manton, which defeated Kalkaska 3-1 in another first round match.
