Prep Basketball Roundup: Leland edges Kingsley in final seconds

LELAND — Austin Fellows connected on two free throws with six seconds remaining, then made a steal on defense with the clock running out to give Leland a 52-51 win against Kingsley.

Fellows, who ended up with eight points, penetrated into the lane in the waning moments and was fouled, then hit both free throws to put the Comets ahead in a back-and-forth game. His steal seconds later sealed the win.

Tyler Leveque led Leland (3-4, 1-2 Northwest) with 22 points, but fouled out. Jonah Wilson had 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Stacy Almquist had 17 points for Kingsley, with Nathan Schaar adding 11.

Leland jumped out to a 17-7 lead after the first period, but Kingsley battled back and made it a 24-20 game at the half. the Comets were still ahead entering the final period, 38-37, and made the decisive plays in the fourth.

The Comets host Suttons Bay on Thursday.

Elk Rapids 54

Benzie Central 37

Elk Rapids started the game with a 15-0 run Monday en route to a 54-37 non-league basketball win at Benzie Central.

Shae Somers led the 5-2 Elks with 17 points. Cole Walker added 15 points and Adam Trautman 10 points and nine rebounds. Ismael Halawek netted 15 points and Javier Rodriquez 12 for the 1-4 Huskies.

Elk Rapids travels to Kalkaska tonight while Benzie hosts Buckley.

TC Christian 62

Manistee CC 55

Kris Crosby scored 19 of his game-high 26 points in the second half as Traverse City Christian defeated Manistee Catholic Central 62-55.

Crosby, who also pulled down 12 rebounds, had 11 points in the third quarter on 7 of 9 shooting as the Sabres (3-3) outscored Catholic Central 14-4 in the third period. That difference allowed Christian to break a 31-31 halftime tie.

A.J. Weber chipped in with 13 points for Christian, which travels to Northport on Thursday.

In the junior varsity game Christian won 42-30.

Grant Maurer led the way with 14 points and Emerson Schlegel had 12.

TC Central Frosh 45

Benzie Central 36

Nik Norton’s 16 points led the Traverse City Central freshmen past Benzie Central 45-36.

Leland Vanderlind’s 11 points topped Benzie.

GIRLS HOOPS

Johannesburg 77

Boyne Falls 28

Brittany Cherwinski’s 22 points and eight rebounds powered Johannesburg-Lewiston to a 77-28 non-league win over Boyne Falls.

Julia Nieman and Madison Showerman chipped in 10 points apiece for the 6-2 Cardinals. Madison Ewing, Abbie May and Hailey Weaver all had eight points. Kelsey Cherwinski contributed five points, seven steals, five rebounds and five assists.

The Cardinals face Inland Lakes on Wednesday.

Gaylord SM 53

Harbor Springs 44

Gaylord St. Mary used a 19-2 run in the second quarter to beat Harbor Springs 53-44 in a non-league contest.

Kari Borowiak’s 22 points paced the 7-1 Snowbirds, who travel to Mancelona on Wednesday. Bekah Myler tossed in 11.

Stephanie Sylvain and Shallon Grawey paced the Rams with 12 points.

Lake Leelanau SM 42

Buckley 30

Three captains led Lake Leelanau St. Mary to a 42-30 non-league win over Buckley.

Rachael Schaub had 14 points and nine rebounds, Megan Popp nine points and Marta Herman eight points to pace the 3-4 Eagles, who led 16-7 at half. Hannah Baldinger’s eight points led Buckley.

St. Mary’s is at Northport on Wednesday.

TC Christian 35

Bear Lake 24

Eighth-grader Rebekah Crosby led Traverse City Christian with 18 points, 11 rebounds and six rebounds in Traverse City Christian’s 35-24 win over Bear Lake.

Kelli Mannes added 11 points and six steals for the Sabres.

Manton 62

Forest Area 34

Karrah Baker scored 23 points to go with nine rebounds and five steals to lead Manton to a 62-34 victory over Forest Area.

Brittany Brauer chipped in with 11 points for the Rangers (3-5), who led 37-18 at the half.

Cami Campbell led Forest Area (1-8) with 12 points and Onna Hulwick had eight.

Forest Area is at Onaway on Wednesday and Manton travels to Marion on Thursday.

McBain 63

Mason Co. Central 36

McBain used a 20-4 second quarter burst to break open a four-point game and give the Ramblers a 63-36 win against Mason County Central.

The Ramblers (6-2, 5-0 Highland) cruised after taking the 34-14 halftime lead.

Meredith Hamlet had 21 points to lead McBain. Maddy Barnette and Kara Houghston each added 11.

For Mason County Central, Madison Geers had 17 points.

McBain hosts Evart on Thursday.

TC West Frosh 44

Harbor Springs 42

Grace Warren scored 10 points while Julia McKean added eight points and nine rebounds as the Traverse City West freshmen beat Harbor Springs 44-42.

Olivia Fouchey pulled down 12 rebounds for the Titans, who take on Alpena tonight.

Benzie Frosh 37

TC Central Frosh 26

April Adams netted 10 points as the Benzie Central freshmen beat Traverse City Central 37-26.

Stevie Herbers had eight points for the Trojans.
