SUTTONS BAY — The Inland Seas Education Association will host an open house on Thursday, Jan. 9, for anyone interested in volunteer opportunities with the ISEA.

The open house will be held from 4-6 p.m. at the ISEA, 100 Dame St. Fred Sitkins, executive director, and Emily Shaw, education and volunteer coordinator, will speak about the organization and available volunteer opportunities. Visitors also will be able to meet and talk with veteran volunteers.

Back Porch music

CHARLEVOIX — Mel Sweet, a founding member of the SweetWater Blues Band, is the featured performer for the Saturday, Jan. 11, Back Porch Music event.

Sweet will perform from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Charlevoix Senior Center building, the corner of Carpenter and Sheridan streets. A circle jam will follow. The doors open at 6:30 p.m. The suggested donation at the door is $5 to $10 and includes soup, cookies, coffee and tea. Proceeds go to the scheduled performer. To learn more, call 622-2944.

Country dance

CADILLAC — The Fonda Starr Band will provide music for line and square dancing on Saturday, Jan. 11.

The dance will be hosted from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at 9116 E. 13th St., next to Kiley Chiropractic. Free dance instruction is provided and listeners are welcome. Donations are appreciated; call 920-8389.

Cottage Coffee

TRAVERSE CITY — Grand Traverse Pavilions' Cottage Coffee Series returns for a new season. Educational programs will be presented on the second Tuesday of each month through December.

Maggie Quinn will be the guest speaker at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, at Hawthorn Cottage on the Pavlions' campus off South Elmwood Avenue. Quinn, a personal trainer, will give a program titled "Resist Sitting Down. Get Up and Move." The program is free and open to the public. Call 932-3027 to learn more.

Spanish class

TRAVERSE CITY — Spanish Conversation I classes will be held at Northwestern Michigan College.

Classes meet from 6-8 p.m. Thursdays, Jan. 16-March 20, in James Beckett room 215. Trips and advanced courses also are offered. Registration should be completed at the NMC Extended Education Office.
