Mancelona woman charged in funeral theft

TRAVERSE CITY — Kalkaska County Prosecuting Attorney Mike Perreault authorized felony charges against a woman accused of stealing donations intended for the funeral of a family friend.

Perreault identified the suspect as Amanda Sue Swikoski, 33.

Swikoski is charged with violation of the charitable solicitation act and using a computer to commit a felony. Swikoski’s arraignment is scheduled for Jan. 15 and she was lodged in Kalkaska County’s jail as of Monday afternoon.

Swikoski is suspected of stealing between $2,000 and $3,000 from a fundraiser for the family of Tyler Antaya. The Mancelona boy, 11, died Nov. 3 in an accident as he rode on dirt bikes with his father and step-brother.

Swikoski organized a fundraiser and online donation page to help the family pay for funeral expenses, but never gave the family the money, authorities contend.

“It’s alleged she had taken some or all the money,” Perreault said.

Swikoski surrendered to authorities Monday morning, Kalkaska County Sheriff Dave Israel said.
