Boys Basketball Roundup: West rallies to beat Gaylord

From staff reports

GAYLORD — Down nine at half, Traverse City West rallied to beat upset-minded Gaylord 63-51 Monday night in a first-round Class A district basketball game at Gaylord.

The Titans, now 10-10, trailed 30-21 at the break.

West regrouped and outscored the Blue Devils 24-10 in the third quarter to take the lead.

The key?

“We made some shots, that helped,” West coach Greg Immink said. “And we rebounded much better.”

The Titans scored just six points in the second quarter in falling back nine.

Alex Scott led the Titans with 27 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Tristen Roman added 14 points and Jonny Wheelock 10 rebounds.

Zach Pasternak topped Gaylord (3-18) with 16 points. Collin Waters added 12 and Steven Fitzek 10.

“Gaylord played a pretty good game,” Immink said. “They brought a lot of energy and it took our guys awhile to match that intensity level.

“The name of the game at tournament time is survive and advance and we’re happy to do that, but I think it also woke us up a little, hopefully.”

West hosts Sault Ste. Marie on Wednesday.
