TRAVERSE CITY — A $9,000 grant will help the Grand Traverse County sheriff’s department buy a new police K-9.
Sheriff’s Capt. Chris Clark said the department plans to make the purchase later this month from a batch of dogs bred in Europe. The new dog will take on the duties of Janusz, an explosive detection K-9 that recently died of an illness after five years with the department.
The Oleson Foundation grant covers the cost of the K-9 and training. Clark said the department hasn’t yet selected a dog, but will do so before a five-week training course in Eaton Rapids.
Explosive detection K-9s are used for multiple purposes beyond sniffing out bombs, including missing persons searches, criminal tracking and officer protection.
