Artist reception

BELLAIRE — An exhibit by pottery artist Andrew Otis will open at the Parkside Arts Council Gallery, 220 N. Bridge St.

Claudia Schmidt performs

Lumberjack program

ELK RAPIDS — Upper Peninsula filmmaker/historian Bill Jamerson will pay musical tribute to Wisconsin and Michigan lumberjacks at the Thursday, Aug. 15, meeting of the Elk Rapids Area Historical Society.

"It's Daylight in the Swamps: A Musical Tribute to the Wisconsin and Michigan Lumberjacks" will start at 7 p.m. at the Elk Rapids Area Historical Museum, 301 Traverse St. A short archival video also will be shown. Admission at the door is a suggested donation of $5 for adults, $2 for students 17 and younger and free for children. Proceeds benefit the historical society's building preservation.

Genealogy workshop

LELAND — Tina Norris, Lifelong Learning genealogy instructor at Northwestern Michigan College, will be the featured presenter at the next monthly genealogy workshop at the Leland Library, 203 E. Cedar St.
