Sheriff's deputies investigate suspicious fires

BUCKLEY — Two suspicious fires that damaged buildings in Grant Township appear to be connected.

Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Capt. Randy Fewless said a passerby reported a single-wide trailer in the 10000 block of Jewel Road was on fire Friday at 7:07 p.m. He said a deputy dispatched to the fire noticed smoke rising from a Ramsay Road pole barn “literally down the street” and the hay inside was aflame.

“It could have been a lot worse if we hadn’t spotted it,” Fewless said.

Investigators believe the fires are related because of their proximity and the fact they occurred within an hour of each other.

Fewless said detectives aren’t ruling out a connection with a recent string of suspicious dumpster and equipment fires in Traverse City and Grand Traverse County, but the investigation is more focused on similarities with other fires in Grant Township.

“We have had several other fires over the past several years in that Grant Township area,” Fewless said.

Members of the public with information on the case are asked to call the Grand Traverse County sheriff’s detective bureau at 995-5002 or the Silent Observer at 947-8477.
