Downtown holiday tree goes up today

TRAVERSE CITY — Downtown motorists can expect some traffic delays this morning from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. as work crews use a crane to place the the city's 30-foot-tall holiday tree at its usual spot on Cass Street, just north of the East Front Street intersection.

The crane also will be used to lower a newly constructed Santa’s house onto its new location at City Centre Plaza at the southeast corner of State and Cass streets.

“We will bag meters on State and there may be brief street closures at the State and Cass and Front and Cass intersections from 9:30 to 10 a.m.,” said Colleen Paveglio, downtown marketing manager.

Elmer’s Crane & Dozer work crews will remove the blue spruce from F&M Park about 9 a.m. and then transport it downtown. The spruce has been encroaching on the TART trails for a few years, Paveglio said.

The Santa House relocation is necessary because a new building is under construction at the northwest corner of Cass and Front and space no longer will be available there, she said.

A permanent location has yet to be decided.
