Schuss Mountain to open Friday

BELLAIRE — Shanty Creek Resorts will open Schuss Mountain on Friday.

“We’re very excited, to say the least,” says Chris Hale, vice president of Shanty Creek. “With snow still falling and snowmaking temps expected to remain throughout the week, it’s too early to say how many runs we’ll open with but one thing is for sure: this is the earliest opening we’ve had in many years.”

To commemorate the early opening and the holiday weekend, Shanty Creek will be offering kids 8 and under free lift tickets and free rentals. There will also be instructors available to teach kids to ski or ride.

Schuss Mountain will be open Friday through Sunday from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. each daily, and will re-open the following weekend, but details have yet to be announced.

Stanford’s VanDerveer nears another milestone

STANFORD, Calif. — Tara VanDerveer has never coached for the milestones or anything else that brings attention to her rather than the players she loves to coach.

That’s why the Hall of Fame Stanford coach is thrilled her latest memorable moment will probably happen in Mexico this week with little fanfare, away from the Bay Area and Maples Pavilion.

VanDerveer can become the fifth women’s basketball coach to reach 900 victories as soon as Wednesday against Florida Gulf Coast in Puerto Vallarta. She stands at 898 wins as the sixth-ranked Cardinal prepare to face Purdue in Mexico on Tuesday.

VanDerveer is set to join the exclusive company of Pat Summitt, Jody Conradt, C. Vivian Stringer and Sylvia Hatchell with 900 wins. Many figure she will coach long enough to reach 1,000.
