Mancelona's Adam Duerksen defended his Division 4 state track title the hard way in the 300 hurdles. For Benzie Central's Devyn Ramsay, her championship in Division 3 added to the state title she won in cross country last year as a sophomore. For Cheboygan's Trey Congeyer, his first-place finish in Division 2 made up for the runner-up finish he posted in the 300 hurdles last season.
A picture was worth some history. Sophomore Rachel Zeppa became the first Grand Traverse Academy athlete to win an event at the 34th annual Record-Eagle Honor Roll track meet.
It was an emotional day for Sue and Joe Shay. The parents of former world class runner Ryan Shay attended the Record-Eagle Honor Roll track meet Tuesday to present the inaugural Ryan Shay Memorial Cups to the boys and girls winners in the 1600 meters.
Traverse City St. Francis came back from last year's Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association state final with a disappointing finish. On Saturday, the Gladiators came back with a title. (Plus, Kingsley sixth, Benzie seventh in Division 3.)
Traverse City West earned a share of its fourth consecutive Big North Conference boys track championship Wednesday. Traverse City Central, meanwhile, won its first girls league title since 2004. (Plus more prep track.)
It doesn't get any more dramatic than this. Ellsworth won the day's final event -- the 1600 relay -- edging Onaway to win the Division 4 boys track and field regional at Bellaire on Saturday. Onaway was second in the 1600 relay.
