Gibbons returns to Record-Eagle; Puit named news editor

TRAVERSE CITY — The Record-Eagle recently added veteran journalists Glenn Puit and Kathy Gibbons to its newsroom management team.

Puit was named the Record-Eagle’s News Editor in late July. He spent the past five years as a policy specialist and assistant communications manager at the Michigan Land Use Institute in Traverse City.

Puit’s 19-year journalism career includes 11 years as an investigative reporter and journalist for Nevada’s largest daily, the Las Vegas Review-Journal newspaper. There he covered the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, then the state and federal courts of Southern Nevada.

Puit is a five-time published author. His role at the Record-Eagle includes reporting and managing the local news staff. Puit’s top journalistic achievement: he was the first reporter in the nation to report the identity of John Doe #2 in the Oklahoma City bombing. Puit’s reporting for the Florence, S.C., Morning News became an international story.

He was born and raised in Ithaca, N.Y., and owns a home in the Upper Peninsula. He lives in Traverse City.

Gibbons returned to the Record-Eagle this week after a four-year hiatus that included a stint as a restaurant owner and work at media outlets in Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids.

Gibbons previously spent 15 years at the Record-Eagle, including several years as Features Editor. Her new position is City Editor, in which she will manage and write for the Features and Business sections.

Gibbons left the Record-Eagle in 2008 to open a restaurant in Traverse City, then sold the business and took a job with Booth Newspapers Regional Content Center, where she managed specialty publications for the Grand Rapids Press, Kalamazoo Gazette, Muskegon Chronicle and Booth statewide.

She continued to live in Traverse City and wrote a lifestyle column and freelance articles for the Record-Eagle. Most recently, she was editorial director for Great American Media Services near Grand Rapids, where she edited a magazine and supervised staff responsible for producing several agricultural and business-to-business publications.

Puit and Gibbons add experience, skill and community knowledge to the Record-Eagle staff, Executive Editor Mike Tyree said.

“I’m excited to have Glenn and Kathy in the newsroom,” Tyree said. “Glenn is a savvy, skilled journalist who made a difference the moment he joined the paper. He’s committed to doing outstanding journalism in this community.

“Kathy is a welcome addition to the news staff,” Tyree added. “She knows the community and paper, has great rapport with our readers, and has a wonderful touch as a writer and manager. We’re glad she’s back.”
