Man beaten outside bar

TRAVERSE CITY — A man needs facial reconstruction surgery after he was assaulted outside a local bar.

David Kantz, 28, had a few drinks at the Sail Inn Bar on Barlow Street on May 30. Owner Joe Williams said Kantz left about 12:30 a.m.

“He comes in once in a while. He doesn’t really cause any problems,” Williams said. “It was a mellow crowd that night.”

Traverse City Police officers were called to the bar around 2:15 a.m. and found Kantz on the sidewalk near a small pool of blood. He suffered injuries to his face and his right eye was swollen shut, according to police report.

Kantz told a detective he remembered arguing with two or three people he did not know in the Sail Inn parking lot, and they left in a pickup truck. He said he didn’t remember “anything happening to him.”

A Sail Inn employee talked to three people outside prior to closing the bar, and one of them was “creeping in the bushes,” the police report states. Traverse City Police Capt. Brian Heffner said detectives interviewed individuals who were in the area at the time of the assault, but no arrests have been made.

“I think the more we look into it and the more people talk amongst themselves, we’ll get new information on what happened,” Heffner said.

Dustin Kantz, the victim’s brother, said he’s heard rumors of who assaulted his brother. He said the attackers took $130 and his brother’s pool stick.

His brother suffered a fractured eye socket and could lose sight in one eye, Dustin Kantz said. Medical staff told a detective there appeared to be a shoe impression on his face, the police report states.

“His face was stomped into the ground,” Dustin Kantz said. “His face is half-destroyed.”

Kantz has three kids, and knowing his attackers are still free left him on edge, Dustin Kantz said.

“He hasn’t slept in four days,” he said. “It messed him up.”
