Body found in field identified

TRAVERSE CITY — Grand Traverse County sheriff's officials identified a man found dead in an East Bay Township field, but haven't yet learned how he died.

The victim is a Traverse City man, 32, who was positively identified by a family member today. Authorities said they will not release the man's identity until all next of kin are notified, which could be as early as Friday, Capt. Randy Fewless said.

"There are maybe some relatives out of state," Fewless said.

Two horseback riders found the body Tuesday in a field northwest of Three Mile and Potter roads. Fewless said it's unknown why the victim was in the field. No identification was found with the body.

A family member told investigators it was not uncommon for the man to leave the area for some time. A description of the deceased person released by media prompted the family to look into his whereabouts.

"Until the description, there weren't any red flags for the family," Fewless said.

Autopsy results were conducted in Grand Rapids, and the cause of death is not yet known. Fewless said there are no indications of foul play or trauma. Detectives are awaiting toxicology results that could take weeks.

"We're still treating it as a suspicious death just because we don't know how he died at this point," Fewless said.
