---- — New cookbook

FRANKFORT — Chef Jim Voltz, director of culinary arts for the Oliver Art Center, is debuting a new summer culinary program as he also launches his fourth cookbook, “Simple Meals on the Porch.”

The cookbook contains more than 50 main-dish recipes, along with accompaniments and desserts. Book signings are scheduled for Saturday, May 25, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Brilliant Books in downtown Traverse City. The second is on Sunday, May 26, from noon to 3 p.m. at Crystal Crate and Cargo in Beulah.

The Art Center’s summer culinary program starts Monday, May 20, Classes are aimed at home cooks, with instructors including Chef Keil Moshier of Chez Peres/Patisserie Amie in Traverse City; Joe Muer, owner of several Michigan restaurants; Kerry Buzzell, head chef at Sleeping Bear Inn; knife skills expert Ed Bartush; Indian cuisine with Pat Sheafor, and several taught by Voltz.

EAST LANSING — Michigan State University Extension is offering a fact sheet on strawberries.

“Michigan Fresh: Using, Storing and Preserving Strawberries” provides information on four methods of freezing and three recipes for canning strawberries. It also lists recommended varieties for canning and preserving.

“My favorite method of freezing strawberries is to use the dry pack method, I then use them for smoothies,” said author and MSU Extension educator Lisa Treiber “It is a quick and easy way to purchase a delicious fruit on sale and enjoy in a healthy drink for breakfast or a snack.”
