‘Duck Dynasty’ stars to visit Bums game

TRAVERSE CITY — Three cast members from A&E’s reality show “Duck Dynasty” will be coming to Wuerfel Park on Aug. 10 when the Traverse City Beach Bums host the Gateway Grizzlies.

John Luke, Sadie and Reed Robertson will be in attendance at the game, sign autographs for fans and take part during in-game promotions. John Luke and Sadie are the children of Duck Commander CEO Willie Robertson.

The Beach Bums will also be wearing camouflage jerseys that will be auctioned off following the contest and signed by the cast members.

Special Olympics team to play in TC

TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City Central girls soccer is hosting the gold medal-winning NorthStar Special Olympics soccer team today at the Coast Guard fields.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m. and will feature two blended teams of NorthStar and TC Central athletes.

All TC Central varsity and junior varsity players will play/volunteer in some capacity and the Special Olympics team is comprised of about 25 athletes ranging from 18-55 years in age. NorthStar athletes will also be recognized for the gold medals they earned at the State Special Olympics Soccer Tournament last fall.

Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.

Van Wormer wins NAHL MVP award

SAULT STE. MARIE — Traverse City native Jared Van Wormer was named the North American Hockey League’s Most Valuable Player on Wednesday.

The former Traverse City Central and Traverse City North Stars standout was also tabbed as the league’s Forward of the Year.

VanWormer, 20, was the league’s leading scorer last season with 76 points (25 goals, 51 assists) in 60 games played, and also helped the Soo Eagles to a playoff berth. He has committed to Ferris State University.

North TC North Stars goalie Tyler Marble was named the league’s Goaltender of the Year after leading the NAHL in save percentage at 93.8 percent.
