SUV collides with semi-truck in Kalkaska

KALKASKA — Three were injured in a two-vehicle Kalkaska Township accident when a driver disregarded a stop sign and ran beneath a tractor trailer.

The crash occurred Tuesday at 6:25 p.m. on M-72 and M-66.

Kalkaska County Sheriff Dave Israel said witnesses saw a GMC sports utility vehicle driven by Daniel Vaughn, 26, of Burton, run a stop sign heading south on M-66.

“We had some pretty good witnesses, including local firemen,” he said. “The SUV blew the stop sign.”

Vaughn’s SUV collided with a semi driven by James Salter, 50, of Mesick, and the SUV carried underneath the trailer near the rear axles. A news release stated the force of t he accident lifted the trailer off the ground and left the SUV underneath.

The SUV driver and passengers were transported to Munson Hospital. Melissa Evans, 34, of Kalkaska, and Teddy Ray Napier, 63, of Kalkaska, were listed in serious condition and fair condition, respectively. Vaughn was not listed as checked in the hospital as of Wednesday afternoon. Salter was not injured.

Authorities closed M-72 to traffic while the accident was investigated.

That crash occurred a little more than a week after a fatal two-vehicle accident in Excelsior Township involving a minivan that transported members of the Grayling High School golf team. Michigan State Police are still investigating the cause of that crash.
