Cider crazy: Triple-digit growth

TRAVERSE CITY — Beer swillers and wine sippers may soon have another choice when they belly-up to a local bar.

That’s because there’s a new contender trying to tap into both markets. And, if the recent success in the hard apple cider industry is any indication, the makers of traditional libations should be shaking in their glasses.

Small producers, like the ones who’ve set up shop in northwest lower Michigan, have capitalized on abundant apple supplies and contributed to the popularity of an industry that likely will see triple-digit growth this year.

“There’s actually more brands of hard cider in Michigan than any other state,” said Mike Beck, owner of Uncle John’s Cider Mill in St. Johns and president of the U.S. Association of Cider Makers.
