SUTTONS BAY — Elk Rapids held off a late comeback attempt by Suttons Bay in posting a 51-46 non-league victory Wednesday.
The Elks were up big early in the game, but the Norsemen came fighting back and were within two points, 45-43, with just over a minute left in the contest. Suttons Bay missed a shot that could’ve tied the game and the Elks hit free throws down the stretch.
Cole Walker and Shae Somers each had 12 points for Elk Rapids. Walker added 14 rebounds and four blocks. Nikola Dimitron added 10 points in the win. For Suttons Bay (0-1), Logan Mikesell had 12 points and Lars Thornton added 11.
Suttons Bay faces Harbor Springs at 4:15 p.m. in Kingsley for the Lake Michigan Conference/Northwest Conference Challenge on Saturday.
Tyler Leveque scored 24 points and Austin Fellows 17 as Leland beat Northport 63-18.
Marcus Stowe netted 10 for Northport.
East Jordan 29
Leland held East Jordan to four points in the fourth quarter as the Comets beat the Red Devils 36-29 to improve to 3-0.
Leland trailed 7-0 to start the game, but battled back to take the lead in the second quarter. Still, East Jordan went into the half with a 17-16 lead. Leland went into the final quarter with a 28-25 edge, then clamped down on the Red Devils.
Libby Munoz led Leland with 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Madison Trumbull added nine points and had a team-high 16 rebounds.
Leading East Jordan was Lindsay Schroeder with 10 points.
Leland hosts Mesick on Friday.
Titans tie Benzie, beat St. Francis
Led by the lower weight classes, five individuals posted a pair of wins each to lead the Traverse City West wrestling team, which tied Benzie Central 42-42 and beat Traverse City St. Francis 56-22 in a tri-meet at TC West.
Cory Johanssen (103 pounds), Vincent Priante (112), Tyler Post (119), Gabe Jasman (152) and Zach Provost (160) all were 2-0 on the night.
