CHICAGO — Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews will miss the rest of the regular season with an upper-body injury.

The team said Wednesday that coach Joel Quenneville expects Toews to be ‘‘100 percent’’ for the playoffs.

Toews was injured after a hit by Penguins defenseman Brooks Orpik on Sunday night. Toews got up slowly and was seen holding his left arm on the bench before heading to the locker room.

The Blackhawks, who have clinched a playoff berth, are already without star forward Patrick Kane, who is out for the rest of the regular season with a lower-body injury. Toews has 28 goals and 68 points this season.

FRONTIER LEAGUE

BEACH BUMS: Traverse City signed catcher Chris Cowell to a one-year extension. Cowell hit .198 with three home runs and 11 RBIs last season as the primary backup to All-Star backstop Marcus Nidiffer, who isn’t returning this year.

NFL

LIONS: Detroit signed former backup quarterback Dan Orlovsky to a one-year contract. Orlovsky, who started seven games at quarterback during the team’s 0-16 season in 2008, has since bounced around the league with Houston, Indianapolis and Tampa Bay since being let go by the Lions following the 2008 season in which he took a safety by mistakenly running out of the end zone. He played under new Lions coach Jim Caldwell during the 2011 season with the Colts.

DOLPHINS: Miami signed former Detroit Lions offensive tackle Jason Fox to a one-year contract. Fox was a fourth-round draft pick by Detroit in 2010, but saw action in only 10 games (two starts) over three injury-riddled seasons. He’s expected to compete fro Miami’s right tackle starting spot.

STEELERS: The Pittsburgh Steelers and free agent wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey have agreed to terms on a 1-year contract.

BRONCOS: The New York Giants have signed former Denver Broncos defensive end Robert Ayers, whose addition makes him the 13th veteran the team has signed since free agency started. Ayers had a career-high 5.5 sacks last season for the Broncos.
