Cadillac game up for vote by Wings

DETROIT — A game between Cadillac and Big Rapids is one of four games that fans can vote for to be covered by the Detroit Red Wings' integrated media team.

Four "High School Hockey at the Joe" are in the running through midnight on Dec. 17 for the honor. Voting will take place via text, on Twitter with specific school hashtags and online at

The winning matchup will have special preview and recap articles appear on, receive extensive social media coverage and be profiled in an official DRW TV Comerica Bank Game Day Preview hosted by broadcaster Ken Kal.

Select in-game promotions such as "tweet your seat" will also be held during the match itself.

Cadillac plays Big Rapids Dec. 19 at 3:30 p.m.

The other games up for consideration are Oxford vs. Lake Orion and Detroit Country Day vs. Utica Eisenhower on Dec. 19 and Livonia Stevenson vs. South Lyon on Dec. 21.

Beach Bums bring back closer Miller

TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City Beach Bums have re-signed closer Matt Miller, who will return for a third season in 2013.

Last season, Miller went 6-4 with 12 saves while compiling a 2.25 ERA in a team record-tying 41 games in relief.

The right-hander walked just six batters in 64.0 innings last season.

Overall in his career with Traverse City, Miller is 7-4 with a 2.49 ERA in 54 appearances. In 90.1 innings he has walked just 14 batters while striking out 54.

Clijsters beats Venus in farewell

ANTWERP, Belgium — Former No. 1 Kim Clijsters ended her career with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Venus Williams in a ceremonial farewell match in Belgium.

Clijsters retired after the U.S. Open but organized a match to thank her fans, 13,000 of whom turned up at Antwerp Sports Palace, including Crown Prince Phillipe and Princess Mathilde.
