To avoid overeating traps during holiday gatherings, try "mind games."
That's Laurel Najarian's recommendation for those who struggle with overeating or other food compulsions.
Najarian, a registered dietician and diabetes educator at Munson Medical Center, offers the following tips:
n Take a walk before a meal or prior to attending an event to help with relaxation and control.
n Eat slower; people who overeat tend to be fast eaters.
n Choose a lot of low-calorie items, such as fresh vegetables, to fill plates and avoid high fat foods such as butter and sour cream.
n Talk during the meal; making it a more social event will help slow food intake and refocus attention away from the food.
n Take another walk, this time after the meal.
"I always go for a walk, before and after, so I don't feel so sluggish," Najarian said. "A walk makes you feel like you have more energy so you don't sit around blobbing all day."
