Kingsley woman's killer sentenced

GRAND RAPIDS — A man convicted of killing a former Kingsley woman likely will spend the rest of his life in prison.

Michael Piranian, 62, was sentenced in Kent County Circuit Court on Thursday to a minimum of 30 years in prison. He previously pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for the death of Kori VanHulle, 24.

VanHulle, a Kingsley High School graduate, died during a March fire at the Grand Rapids-area house where she and others lived with Piranian. Authorities said Piranian set fire to boxes under a stairwell and VanHulle couldn't escape.

Chief Assistant Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker said Piranian during sentencing told a judge that VanHulle deserved to die because she and others were "conspiring" against him.

"He made some appalling statements," Becker said.
