Tractor Supply turns soil in Benzonia

BENZONIA — At least 12 new jobs are headed to Benzie County with the construction of a Tractor Supply Co. store.

The Record-Eagle first reported in August 2013 on Tractor Supply’s exploration of a retail outlet along U.S. 31 in Benzonia Township. The Tennessee-based company declined comment at the time.

Developers turned soil on the new store this spring. Tractor Supply spokesman Michael Graham said Benzonia fits Tractor Supply’s business model because of the area’s agriculture-based demographics.

“There are a lot of part time and hobby farmers and horse owners in the area,” Graham said.

Graham said an opening of the 19,000 square-foot store is tentatively scheduled for late September.

Township Supervisor Jim Sheets said the store at 1352 Michigan Ave. is expected to be a “carbon copy” of other Tractor Supply stores. Sheets said the store will make for a nice addition to a township corridor that’s drawn increased interest from retailers, given the 10,000 cars that daily travel through the area.

“It fills a need that is here that exists,” Sheets said. “I don’t think it competes with too many businesses already established.”

Tractor Supply operates more than 1,245 stores in 48 states. The stores retail merchandise for the health, care, growth and containment of horses, livestock and pets. The business also sells agricultural products, tools and hardware along with work-related clothing lines.
