Harvest Stompede set for Sept. 7-8
SUTTONS BAY — The Harvest Stompede race is scheduled for Sept. 7-8 this year.
The weekend festivities kick off with an optional race through the vineyards at 9 a.m. Sept. 7 at Ciccone Vineyards in Suttons Bay. The course between rows of grapevines and is designed for both serious and recreational runners and walkers, with options for a 5K walk, 5K run or 7-mile run.
Following the race, 23 wineries each offer a special wine and food pairing. Tasting hours for the self-guided tour along the Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sept. 7 and noon to 5 p.m. Sept. 8. Tickets — only available in advance — are $40 per person and are available at www.lpwines.com/harvest.

Mopar event at NM Dragway
KALEVA — Northern Michigan Dragway is preparing for its largest and most popular event of the season this weekend.
Billed as the “16th Annual Mopars Against the World,” it features a Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth, Jeep, Eagle or AMC vehicle in every race against a competitive make until no longer possible, due to the total elimination of their competitors. For Bragging rights a score is kept of total head to head wins.
Last year’s event saw the World edge out the Mopars 101 to 88; however the Mopars took the cake four of the last six years.
Detroit Lions sign WR Schilens
ALLEN PARK — The Detroit Lions have signed wide receiver Chaz Schilens.
Schilens comes to Detroit after spending the 2012 season with the New York Jets, playing in 15 games with 28 receptions for 289 yards and two touchdowns. Prior to his stint in New York, Schilens played four seasons with the Oakland Raiders, where he saw action in 44 games.
A seventh-round draft pick by the Raiders out of San Diego State in 2008, Schilens’ career totals include 59 games played (25 starts), 100 receptions for 1,191 yards and nine touchdowns.
Jurrjens, Tigers ink minor-league deal
DETROIT — The Detroit Tigers signed Jair Jurrjens to a minor-league contract.
The former Tigers prospect — who won 27 games in his first two years in Atlanta after being traded for shortstop Edgar Renteria — will join the Toledo Mudhens on Friday.
He will join Jeremy Bonderman in Toledo as former Tigers starters who flamed out with other organizations and ran into injury problems. Over his career, Jurrjens has a 53-37 record with a 3.63 ERA. He was designated for assignment by Baltimore last week and pitched 7.1 innings for the Orioles and gave up four earned runs.
