WASHINGTON, Pa. — The Traverse City Beach Bums did their part.
Scott Dunn, Jacob Sabol and Nick Capito pitched scoreless ball.
Chase Burch reached base twice and scored a run.
In the end, though, the West hung on for a 4-2 win over the East in the Frontier League All-Star game here Wednesday night.
Dunn, who’s 10-0, started for the East, retiring all three batters he faced in the first.
His replacement, Lake Erie’s Matt Rein, ran into problems in the second as the West pushed across three unearned runs to take a lead it never relinquished. A single, hit batter and error loaded the bases with one out. Schaumburg’s Mike Valadez hit into a fielder’s choice to bring in the first run. Schaumburg’s Sean Mahley followed with a two-run double.
The East rallied for two in the bottom of the sixth when Southern Illinois’ Gerardo Avila doubled, Burch walked and Evansville’s John Schultz and Lake Erie’s Max Casper delivered RBI singles.
The West gained one of those runs back in the top of the seventh on a walk and RBI double by Gateway’s Landon Hernandez.
The East threatened in the eighth, loading the bases with one out, but Casper hit into a double play to end the inning. Burch walked in the frame.
Traverse City manager Gregg Langbehn, who skippered the East, used 10 pitchers. No one threw more than an inning. The East outhit the West 6-5. Avila was the only player with two hits in the game. Sabol allowed one hit in his inning of work. Capito struck out the only batter he faced in the ninth.
Traverse City’s Taylor Wrenn started at shortstop for the East and went hitless in three at-bats. Catcher Marcus Nidiffer entered the game in the seventh. He struck out in his only plate appearance.
