Maple City man faces sex crime charge

TRAVERSE CITY — A Maple City man faces a sex crime charge on accusations he sexually assaulted a 12-year-old boy.

Grand Traverse County sheriff's deputies arrested Kevin Willard Smythe, 55, on Tuesday after investigating a suspected sexual assault on a boy at a Long Lake Township residence.

Noelle Moeggenberg, chief assistant deputy prosecutor for Grand Traverse County, said she authorized a first-degree criminal sexual conduct charge against Smythe. Court records show in 2000 he pleaded guilty to second-degree criminal sexual conduct, a case that involved a 10-year-old victim.
