Beach Bums suffer another one-run loss

TRAVERSE CITY — One-run games continue to haunt Traverse City this season.

The Beach Bums fell to 4-15 in those contests, including a 3-2 loss to River City on Wednesday at Wuerfel Park — the second straight loss to the Rascals in a one-run game.

Traverse City (15-26) fell behind 3-0 Wednesday, battled back with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but left the tying run stranded at third in the ninth.

“It’s tough, it does take a toll on you, but the next day you just have to go after it the same way and just try to put more runs up on the board and get the timely hits,” Traverse City outfielder Jeff DeBlieux said of the close losses that have become common in 2014.

It was miscommunication in the outfield that proved to be costly to Traverse City’s chances as a misplayed ball by DeBlieux in left field and Greg Harisis in center led to River City scoring its last two runs in the seventh inning. The two teammates converged on a fly ball off the bat of the Rascals’ Bryan Aanderud, but neither could come up with the catch as the ball fell between them. Aanderud ended up at second, while Hector Crespo and Eric Williams crossed the plate.

“We’re still playing or we win the ball game if we catch the ball,” Traverse City manager Dan Rohn said. “We’re making big mistakes when we can’t. Last night was a game of attrition. Tonight we played a clean game, then the ball falls between the center fielder and the left fielder. The center fielder called it and the left fielder backed off, then he (center fielder) backed off. We can’t make those mistakes, especially when we’re struggling. They capitalized and we can’t get back into it.”
