Late birdies propel Huffer to Open title

THOMPSONVILLE — Becca Huffer won the Colorado Women’s Open last summer.

Now the 23-year-old can add the Michigan Women’s Open title to her resume.

Huffer sank birdie putts on the final two holes Wednesday to win the Michigan Women’s Open by two shots on Crystal Mountain Resort’s Mountain Ridge course. The former Notre Dame captain and Symetra Tour professional tied a tournament record with an 11-under 205 in the three-day, 54-hole event. Kimberly Dinh and Ashlan Ramsey tied for second at 9-under 207.

“This feels awesome,” Huffer said afterwards. “You always want to win and I got it done today.”

Huffer, Dinh and Ramsey were deadlocked at nine-under entering play Wednesday. They were still tied at nine-under after No. 16. That’s when Huffer made a move, rolling in a long birdie putt on 17 to take the lead.

“I knew I had to make something,” she explained. “That putt on 17 was huge.

“It was 20 to 25-feet downhill and when I hit it I was like ‘oh boy, I hope it goes in.’”

It did and it turned the match in her favor.

On the par-5 18th, all three reached the green in three. Ramsey and Dinh missed birdie putts, all but sealing the win for Huffer, who emphatically closed it out by sinking her birdie putt for a two-shot edge.

“Becca played great, steady golf,” Dinh said. “She made a couple putts when it really counted, especially on 17. That’s not an easy hole.”

Huffer was awarded a crystal trophy and a check for $5,500.

The 205 was her lowest 54-hole score, and the 11-under marked the first time she’s finished a tournament double-digits under par.

“That second round (64) helped a lot,” she said.

The three leaders were on No. 15 when heavy rains moved in, forcing a suspension of play for three hours and 40 minutes. The rain left the course soft, but still playable.
