BOYNE CITY — The Grain Train Natural Foods Market in Petoskey will open a satellite market in Boyne City.

The new market will be housed in the 1550-square-foot Waters Building storefront at 104 S. Park Street. It will be one-quarter the size of the Petoskey store but will feature many of the same products to meet the shopping needs of Boyne City customers.

The Grain Train has been in downtown Petoskey for over 41 years and is the area’s only certified organic grocer.

Cooker demo

BEULAH — A free culinary demonstration featuring the Fasta Pasta® microwave cooker will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday at Crystal Crate & Cargo. It will be repeated at the same time on Friday, Aug. 2, and Saturday, Aug. 3.

The cooking device was created by Michigander Steve McMahon and his wife, Midori, who will be demonstrating various uses they have perfected, including pastas, soups, fresh vegetables, casseroles and even cakes.

Winery medals

SUTTONS BAY — L Mawby received a Gold medal and six Silver medals in the Seventh Annual Mid-American Wine Competition.

The July 12-14 competition in Ankeny, Iowa, included wines from 14 Midwestern states. It was judged by professional wine judges from across the U.S. with over 200 years of cumulative experience. In all, 66 Gold medals, 155 Silver medals, and 188 Bronze medals were awarded.

Brewery opens

TRAVERSE CITY — Brewery Terra Firma opened at 2959 Hartman Rd., just south of the Grand Traverse Mall.

The brewery is primarily a production facility which will distribute its beer in the seven-county area surrounding Traverse City. It’s located on 10-acre historic farm, which will generate the ingredients — hops, herbs, fruits, vegetables and honey — to make its beers.

A taproom and outdoor beer garden adjacent to the brew house seats 64 and pours seven beers crafted onsite by Brew Master John Niedermaier. They include a blonde ale, amber ale, American pale ale, India pale ale, black IPA, extra special bitter and a porter. Eventually the brewery will house 40 taps of Brewery Terra Firma beers.
