All shapes, persuasions

While going door-to-door in Traverse City for Gary McDowell this fall I encountered many people who supported another candidate. Invariably these encounters were polite and respectful, which I think is a real credit to the civility and decency of this community. But one day I came across a house with multiple lawn signs proclaiming that "Real heroes vote Republican" and a life-size poster of an older gentleman in a military uniform. I found this display of hyper-partisan "patriotism" incredibly offensive.

You see, I have a son who is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who did two deployments in Iraq. And I knew that my Marine, now a law student, would be in Virginia on election day working with a team of lawyers making sure that their fellow citizens would not be denied their most fundamental right by widespread GOP efforts to suppress the vote.

Real heroes come in all shapes, sizes, and persuasions. That's something worth remembering now that the election is behind us.

Some of us struggling

In reference to Mr. Bonnell's letter of Nov. 12, everyone is where they are at by the choices they make from the time they're in high school through "adulthood."

But, things change. Life changes. Those whose homes were wrecked by Sandy chose to live where they did and so we should let them suffer? A student's father dies and we help him to stay in school to learn a vocation, so we do not need to help him later?

Things in life change us. I was on a passenger airplane when 9/11 occurred. Lives were changed by the time the plane was grounded.

Is a worker guilty of poor planning because his employer ran off with all the pension funds?

A carpenter, in the past, changed lives when he asked those around him to share their loaves of bread.

The sinners among us makes the rest of us look good. We need to aid those wishing to help and wishing to do better, work with them. Do not condemn all.

Count your blessings. Some of us are still struggling and I am only 80.
