2 local DNR fishing meetings slated
LANSING — Two public meetings will be held locally to discuss new or proposed local and statewide fishing regulations.
The meetings will discuss local fisheries management and regulation proposals and modifications to northern pike and muskellunge rules that were adopted for the 2013 fishing season.
Several minor rules changes go into effect on April 1 this year, and musky statewide rules change to a one-per-year limit per angler
A meeting will be held March from 7-9 p.m. in Cadillac at the Carl T. Johnson Hunting and Fishing Center on M-115. Another is planned for April 2 from 6-8 p.m. at the Cheboygan Sportsman Club.
Oleksy credited with assist in NHL debut
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Former Traverse City North Stars defenseman Steven Oleksy had an assists in his NHL debut in the Washington Capitals’ 4-3 win over the Boston Bruins on Tuesday.
Oleksy — who played collegiately for Lake Superior State — was signed to a one-year contract Monday after recalled from Hershey, the Caps’ American Hockey League affiliate.
Oleksy played in Traverse City during the 2005-06 season, when he was a captain. He was the first North Stars player who has seen regular duty in a TC uniform to land a college scholarship.
Lions sign LB Levy, add punter
DETROIT — The Detroit Lions have signed outside linebacker DeAndre Levy to a contract extension.
NFL.com is reporting that the deal is for three years.
The Lions also signed punter Blake Clingan.
Granger could miss another week
INDIANAPOLIS — Pacers forward Danny Granger could miss another week with a sore left knee.
Granger missed the first 54 games with the same injury and sat out the second half of Sunday night’s victory over Chicago after aggravating the injury.
The team issued a statement saying an MRI done on Granger’s knee showed no new damage to the knee. The team says he will be re-evaluated next week. Pacers coach Frank Vogelthought Granger had the MRI on Monday and said he would have been available in a playoff situation.
NCAA investigator supported Shapiro
CORAL GABLES, Fla. — One of the investigators who worked the NCAA’s inquiry of Miami athletics wrote a letter on former booster and convicted felon Nevin Shapiro’s behalf just days before he was sentenced two years ago.
In the letter dated June 3, 2011, Ameen Najjar told U.S. District Judge Susan Wigenton that Shapiro assisted the NCAA with investigations involving a number of schools.
Najjar also wrote that the NCAA “could utilize Mr. Shapiro in the future as a consultant.”
Rangers add veteran Hamrlik
NEW YORK — The Rangers are adding veteran defenseman Roman Hamrlik to the roster while they wait to find out the severity of Marc Staal’s eye injury.
