Prep Girls Basketball Districts: TC West shocks Marquette

TRAVERSE CITY — Marquette's winning streak ended abruptly.

Traverse City West shut down the Redettes Wednesday to notch a 39-34 Class A playoff victory that allows the Titans to host the district finals Friday against Gaylord.

"This was a terrific win," West coach Dave Ginsberg said. "That was a very good team."

Marquette (18-3) had won five in a row, including Monday's 53-46 district win over Big North Conference champion Petoskey.

Katie Placek not only scored 19 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and hit 11 of 13 free throws, but also shut down Marquette's leading scorer. Hunter Viitala, who scored 21 in an eight-point Redettes win over West in the regular season, was limited to eight Wednesday.

Paris Wagner added nine points and eight rebounds for the Titans (10-12).

Morgan Selbert led Marquette with 12 points.

Gaylord moved on to the Class A district finals Friday at Traverse City West with a 53-42 win over Traverse City Central.

The Blue Devils (12-9) will face the host Titans.

Gaylord jumped out to an 18-4 lead after the first quarter, and the Trojans chipped away at that lead.

"We were just fighting back the whole game," Central coach Ryan Knudsen said. "We kept fighting back, but unfortunately came up on the short end."

Mackenzie Edwards scored 22 points and Sarah Polena 12 for Gaylord.

Tyler Rawlings led the Trojans (5-15) with 16 and Madi Bankey added nine.

The Blazers (17-3) host the district final Friday against Ogemaw Heights, which beat Cheboygan 46-27.
