---- — Beach Bums add outfielder Cooper

TRAVERSE CITY — The Traverse City Beach Bums signed outfielder Shaun Cooper.

The right-handed batter signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks prior to last season and hit .213 last season for the Class A Yakima Bears with six home runs and 29 RBIs. He was seventh in the Northwest League with 37 walks and was hit by pitches nine times to rank 10th in the circuit.

Cooper played two seasons at the University of Utah where he was a Mountain West Conference All-Star as a junior, hitting .332 with eight homers while driving in 43. His average was seventh in the league while his power totals each were ninth. He had seven triples, leading the MWC and ranking 10th nationally.In 2012, he hit .228 with eight homers and 30 RBIs.

The Tucson, Ariz., native also played a season at the University of Arizona, where he hit .300 throughout 27 games in 2009.

Registration underway for spring youth lacrosse

TRAVERSE CITY — Registration is underway for the YMCA spring youth lacrosse league.

The league is for players in grades 1-8. Players need their own protective gear to play.

The league runs from April 8 to May 20. Registration deadline is March 18.

YMCA Midnight Madness tourney set for March 15

TRAVERSE CITY — The YMCA will host a Midnight Madness 3-on-3 basketball tournament for boys and girls in grades 5-9 on March 15.

The event starts ad 5 p.m. and costs $120 for teams of three or four players. Registration deadline is March 8. Players receive a shirt and the event will be a double-elimination format.

Spring youth soccer registration underway

TRAVERSE CITY — The YMCA spring youth soccer league for players in grades K-8 will run from April 28 to June 8.

Cost is $35 for YMCA members or $70 for non-members. Registration deadline is March 29.

All players need a red shirt for home games and a yellow shirt for away games. Teams are made by school and special request.

Toxic Cherries hit the road for bout

TRAVERSE CITY — The Toxic Cherries will travel to USA Skate Center in Mishawaka, Ind., on March 9 for a roller derby bout against the South Bend Roller Girls.

For the second road contest of the 2013 season, doors open at 5 p.m. and game time is 6 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at Brown Paper Tickets or at the door on game day. Regular score updates will be posted on Traverse City Roller Derby's Facebook and Twitter pages.
