TC could renew fire contract with airport

TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City officials are likely to renew a contract for emergency services with Cherry Capital Airport.

City commissioners this week reached a general agreement to continue the contract with a mark-up of 5 percent or less.

The city's fire department staffs one emergency first responder at the airport around-the-clock, based on the terms of the current contract that is worth about $312,000 annually, City Manager Ben Bifoss said.

That contract will expire next June, but airport officials wanted a deal with the city before the start of 2013 to budget for the next calender year.

Bifoss said he needs to meet with airport Director Kevin Klein before any contract extension can be finalized.
