Recipe of the Week: Best Baked Apples

Frequent contributor Sally DeWeese shared today's recipe.

Best Baked Apples

Ida Red or Honeycrisp apples

Butter or margarine

Light brown sugar

Cinnamon

Maple syrup

Core and peel apples, leaving 3/4 of the apple skin on. Place in heavy black skillet. Take 1 T. margarine or butter and cut in half, putting one piece in center of each apple. Sprinkle light brown sugar on that, then a little more margarine or butter. Sprinkle light brown sugar over top of each apple. Sprinkle with cinnamon. Pour maple syrup over each apple (about 1-2 T. each). Add about ¼-½ c. water to the bottom of the pan. This will form a syrup as it bakes.

Bake at 350° for about an hour. After 30 minutes, baste each apple with liquid from pan using turkey baster. Do that again in 15 minutes, and every 15 minutes until done. Check if done with meat fork.

Remove from oven and let sit until serving time. Keep basting. These apples are excellent cold or warm in the microwave.

Optional: Serve with ice cream or Cool Whip.
