TRAVERSE CITY — John E. Mumby, 76, of Traverse City, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2013, while surrounded by family. He was born on Nov. 1, 1936, in Jefferson, Iowa, to Roy J. and Dorothy M. (Ogren) Mumby. He grew up in California.
After graduating from high school he joined the army, where he served honorably in the Berlin Brigade and was recognized for expert marksmanship.
He then began a career in the moving business for Steven's and Allied Van Lines, driving truck and warehouse management.
He was a lifetime membership of the NRA.
His hobbies included hunting, fishing, woodworking, cooking, baking, going to the shooting range, and reading westerns, biographies and history.
He is survived by his longtime companion, Beverly Andrews and family; six children, Denise Williams, Elizabeth Fischer, Michelle (Matt) Schweighart, Michael Fischer, Robin (Roger) Case and John E. (Lisa) Mumby II; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a sister, Joan Holzborn; and two brothers, Jim (Laverne) Mumby and Jay Mumby.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jerry Mumby; and a great-grandson.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, at the Church of the Living God, 1514 Birmley Road, Traverse City. The family will greet friend starting at 10 a.m.
Memorials contributions may be made to the Munson Regional Healthcare Foundation, Heart to Heart Program, 210 Beaumont Place, Traverse City, MI 49684, a program to help those in need of financial assistance.
