GAYLORD — Traverse City West erupted for four goals in the third period Wednesday to beat Gaylord 4-1 in a Big North Conference hockey contest.
It was 0-0 after two periods.
Erik Anton broke the stalemate just 23 seconds in the final period, scoring off assists from John Linenger and Jake Saxton.
Gaylord came back to tie 6:55 into the period on a Garrett Richardson tally.
Less than a minute later, West regained the lead on Greg Brandt’s goal. Nick Schultz and Ashton Lawton drew the assists.
The Titans added two more goals in the next two minutes — the first by Michael Lake from Jordan Stevenson and the second by Saxton from Linenger.
West outshot Gaylord 45-16. Brendan Lacharite turned aside 15 shots for the Titans in goal.
Caitlin McKee and Libby Munoz scored 18 points apiece as Leland defeated Northport 48-38 in its season opener.
McKee added four assists and Munoz eight steals for the Comets, who travel to Lake Leelanau St. Mary on Monday.
Mariah Kalchik netted 14 points and Morgan Collins 10 for Northport.
Boyne Falls 35
Eileene Naniseni scored 21 points as Mancelona opened its season with a 46-35 non-league win over Boyne Falls.
Mancelona hosts Inland Lakes next Wednesday.
Suttons Bay 29
Leighton Koepke led a balanced attack with 11 points as Bellaire upended Suttons Bay 42-29 in a season-opening game.
Renee Lalone and Madalyn Balon contributed eight points apiece. Lalone added five rebounds and four assists.
Delaney Kaufman scored nine points and Andrea Emery eight for Suttons Bay. Kaufman also pulled down 13 rebounds.
Manistee held Kingsley to one field goal in the fourth quarter to pull out a 55-46 non-league win.
The game was tied at 41-all after three quarters.
Emily Kott paced the Chippewas with 15 points. Emily Thompson, Audrey Tomaszewski and Jessica Gustad all added nine points.
Manistee (2-0) hosts Manton tonight.
Lakers win JV tournament at SF
Nichole Cox scored nine points and Madison Alonzi seven as Glen Lake edged Harbor Springs 29-28 in the JV championship game of the Katie Heintz Keep Believin’ Tip-Off Tournament.
Claire Fleming netted 10 points for the Rams.
St. Francis won the consolation game with a 34-18 triumph over Bear Lake. Colleen LaBonte tossed in 14 points and Abby Brodeur 10 for the 1-1 Gladiators. Katelyn Pryune had 11 for Bear Lake.
