Campaign finance app

LANSING — A new campaign finance application offering voters access to state campaign contribution information is now available on the Android smartphone platform, according to the Michigan Secretary of State's office.

The Michigan Campaign Finance Search application can be accessed in the Google Play Store. It allows users to search for records by the names of state candidates and committees as well as by election period, party affiliation, committee type and the office being sought. The app displays direct and in-kind contributions received, expenditures and debt owed.

A version for iPads and iPhones was released in April in the Apple App Store and remains available for download.

Records for more than 11,000 active and non-active political committees and millions of transactions are available and show dollar totals and contributors' names, but not individual transactions.

New innovation center

LANSING — Michigan will soon be home to the first national innovation center designed to accelerate manufacturing in Michigan and across the U.S. by providing easy access to digital modeling and simulation tools for businesses.

A joint effort of the National Center for Manufacturing Sciences, GE and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, the center will provide small and midsize manufacturers high performance modeling, simulation and analysis, data mining tools, and the digitization of processes to optimize speed, reliability and efficiency.

MEDC has provided a grant for the creation of the center, with matching funds from NCMS members. The center will be housed in GE's Advanced Manufacturing and Software Technology Center, located in Wayne County's Van Buren Township. It is expected to open to the public in early 2013.
