Follow the money

Regarding health care, Benishek and his tea party allies are maliciously missing the point. Instead of asking who should pay for health care (after all, we all pay in one form or another), they should be asking why Americans pay so much for health care. Brace yourself — it could be old-fashioned greed.

One example — Time magazine cites an artificial hip that costs the American manufacturer about $350 to produce. Typically, hospitals pay between $4,500 and $7,500 and the hospital then charges the patient $25,500 to $40,000. That’s about $30,000 stuffed into the pockets of very few stockholders, thousands of times each day. Many of these people financially support tea partiers like Benishek and Sen. Ted Cruz.

Benishek and his tea party cronies shut our government down, in part to eliminate a 2.3 percent tax on the obscene profits enjoyed by medical device companies. Benishek continually reminds us he’s a physician and yet he doesn’t fight for fair pricing of treatment for his constituents. Just the opposite, in fact.

Is Benishek a lobbyist for medical companies, or a representative for folks in Northern Michigan? Follow the money, then decide next November.

Mayor should resign

To paraphrase Herman Melville, I’d rather have a sober heathen as mayor than a drunken Christian. My apologies to Mr. Melville.

Our mayor has made a very poor choice in judgment. He drank and then drove under the influence.

I also got a DWI some 45 years ago and I know that this behavior has severe consequences. I got a $1,500 fine, 60 days in jail and forfeited my driver’s license for six months — my jail time was suspended.

He deserves the chance to redeem himself and make amends. He will need time to crawl out of the bottle and pay his debt to society. AA meetings and 12-step programs will guide him down the straight and narrow path.

I support his future efforts, but not on any time or dime. He should resign, dry up and clean up his reputation by clean, sober living, and in two years run again for mayor.
