Prep roundup: Charlevoix moves on to districts

CHARLEVOIX — Charlevoix punched its ticket in the district semifinals with a 7-5 Division 3 pre-district win Wednesday over Elk Rapids.

The Rayders built a 5-0 lead after four innings before the Elks rallied.

Elk Rapids scored two in the sixth and three with just one out in the seventh before Tommy Zipp struck out the final two batters to end the game. Zipp tossed a complete-game four-hitter with three walks and seven strikeouts.

Nate Moon hit a home run, a double and drove in two runs, while Austin Putman added an RBI double in the sixth. Noah Serta’s sacrifice fly brought in the sixth’s other Charlevoix run, and he drove in one with a single earlier.

The Rayders (25-2) host Harbor Springs at 10 a.m. Saturday in district play.


Gaylord St. Mary 13

Wolverine 0

Gaylord St. Mary shut out Wolverine in Division 4 pre-district play.

Brendon Nowicki struck out six while tossing a three-hitter without a walk.

Matt Spyhalski and Adam Nowicki had two hits and two runs each, while Jack Lockinski and Brendon Nowicki each added two hits.

The Snowbirds (13-8) advance to play Johannesburg-Lewiston in Saturday’s district at noon after the two split the regular-season matchups.

Benzie Central 2 0

Seven different Traverse City West pitchers combined to strike out 24 batters in a 10-2 and 10-0 sweep of Benzie Central in a non-conference district tune-up.

Walt Borkovich, Keegan Kenny, Trent McDougall and Paul Soma tallied 16 strikeouts between them in the opener, giving up only one hit.

Collin Bush and Max Ludka each had two hits and an RBI, McDougall had a pair of hits, Donny Cizek doubled in a run and Jared Roth doubled.

Ludka, Wes Talbot and Roth combined to whiff eight in the four-hit nightcap.

Geordon Carter had three hits, a double and an RBI to lead the offense, while Will Reed drove in three runs on two hits, Dean Simsa and Matt Kirkey each had two hits and an RBI and Borkovich doubled and drove in three.
