Blizzard hoops tourney is Jan. 25

TRAVERSE CITY — The 2014 YMCA “Blizzard” boys 7th and 8th grade team basketball tournament is scheduled for Jan. 25 at 9 a.m.

Deadline to enter is Jan. 13 and the team fee is $200. This is a round robin tournament where each team is guaranteed three games. Games are officiated and awards are given to the top team in each division. Seventh and 8th graders are separate divisions.

TC West baseball clinic set for Jan. 4

TRAVERSE CITY — A baseball clinic is being held at Traverse City West High School on Jan. 4 for kids age 9-12. The clinic runs from 9 a.m.-noon and costs $50. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.

Players will be broken down into four groups and the clinic will focus on hitting/bunting, outfield drills, infield drills, baserunning and throwing.

TC Roller Derby elects new leaders

TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City Roller Derby has announced new leadership for 2014. The newly elected executive board members include Brandy Gallagher, president; Laura Riess, vice president; Nicole Farkas, secretary; Chrissie Gadd, human resources; and Michelle Reardon, treasurer.

Board of Directors elected members include Liz Mac Intyre, coaching; Jenna Doornbos, events; Angela Schoppe, facilities; Angela Stricker, fundraising; Tony Pernicano, IT; David Curtis, legal; Kate Scarbrough, medical; Veronica Mork, merchandise; Ericca “CC” Hovie, public relations; Dave Weaver, officials; and Lisa Kelly, sponsorship.

Holiday Hoops 3-on-3 at TC Christian

TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City Christian High School is holding a Holiday Hoops 3-on-3 tournament on Saturday, Jan. 4 for boys and girls in grades 4-8, starting at 10 a.m. For more information contact the school at 929-1747.

Padres, Benoit agree on contract

SAN DIEGO — The San Diego Padres have agreed with former Detroit Tigers closer Joaquin Benoit on a $15.5 million, two-year contract, a person familiar with the situation said Wednesday.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal is pending Benoit passing a physical.
